One of the titans of the amp-building world, Vox have a legacy most companies only dream of. First established in 1947, Vox have an artist roster that includes Brian May, The Beatles, Kurt Cobain, Tom Petty, The Edge, Hank Marvin and Ritchie Blackmore amongst countless others.
One of Vox’s longest standing models, the AC15 was first released in 1958. It is an all-valve 15-watt design that features two channels – Normal and Top Boost and has built-in spring reverb and tremolo.
Both channels have independent volume controls and the Top Boost channel has the addition of two highly interactive treble and bass controls. This allows you to dial in your tone to suit your specific rig, whether it be getting the sparkle out of your Stratocaster or the grunt out of your Les Paul.
In the “Master” section, we have controls for Volume and Tone Cut. Tone Cut is another EQ shaping device that operates in the power stage of the amp’s circuit rather than the preamp. The master volume controls the overall output of the amp but more importantly, allows proper gain staging of the Normal and Top Boost channels.
At 15-watts, the Vox AC15 amp is certainly loud enough to gig but also perfect for practice and recording situations.
With a pair of EL84 tubes in the preamp section and a single 12” Celestion Greenback speaker- the AC15 is a quintessentially British voiced tone machine (that loves pedals, by the way!) in a portable and classic package.
